NOTE: On 4000S Quattro models, DO NOT move vehicle without drive axle or outer CV joint installed, or wheel bearing will be damaged.
NOTE: Remove and install axle nut only with wheels on ground.
  1. Loosen wheel bolts slightly. Remove axle nut cover and axle nut. Raise vehicle on hoist and remove wheel. Press off tie rod end.
  2. Remove brake caliper mounting bolts. Detach brake hose from mounting bracket. Remove caliper and wire out of the way. Remove brake disc.
  3. Remove ball joint clamp bolt and pry ball joint out of hub. Press out stub axle from hub (use mechanical or hydraulic puller only).
  4. Remove fuel tank cover and sun roof storage holder. Supporting strut from below, remove mounting nut. When removing strut mounting nut, rear axle assembly must not be under tension.
  5. Mount spring tensioner in vise. Using Spring Tensioner (VW 340), compress spring. Using Shock Absorber Wrench (VW 524), remove slotted nut, strut bearing, spring retainer, spring tensioner and individual strut components.
  6. Clamp wheel bearing housing in vise. Remove threaded cap and shock absorber.
