Disc & Drum: Description

All models have front disc brakes with sliding calipers. On 4000S Quattro, 4000CS Quattro, 5000S Turbo, and 5000CS Turbo models, sliding caliper disc brakes are also used on rear axle. As of 8/12/86 only Teves calipers were used on rear brake applications. On all other models, drum brakes are used on rear axle. Both front and rear brakes are self-adjusting.

The hydraulic system uses tandem master cylinder with either vacuum or hydraulic power assist. Tandem system on FWD models uses diagonal front and rear pairing so left front and right rear wheels form one circuit while right front and left rear wheels form the other circuit. On 4WD models, front wheels form one circuit while rear wheels form the other circuit.

A pressure regulator is used to prevent premature lock-up of rear wheels. Pressure regulator is adjustable, on all models except 4000S Quattro and 4000CS Quattro. Cable-actuated parking brake mechanically applies rear brakes when handle is pulled up.

NOTE: For information on Anti-Lock Brake Systems (ABS) for 1986 5000 series see the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article in this section.
NOTE: The hydraulic pump is a rotary piston type pump which consists of two independent circuits. Hydraulic fluid used is hydraulic oil. One circuit with six working pistons supplies power assisted steering, while the second circuit with two pistons supplies pressure to the hydraulic servo.
