DESCRIPTION
The Coil-on-Plug (COP) are high energy coils with s ground circuit to prevent any unintended discharge which could result in a misfire. Each COP:
- Is used with each spark plug
- Is mounted over the top of the spark plug installed in a cavity of the cylinder head
The COP consists of a:
- Coil assembly
- Primary electrical connector
- Secondary conductor
- Spark plug boot
OPERATION
- The Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay provides battery voltage to the ignition coil.
- The PCM provides a ground path with an internal Low Side Driver (LSD).
- When the PCM opens the LSD, the ground path is broken and the energy in the coil primary.
- The PCM will de-energize the ASD relay if it does not receive the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor inputs
