Rear Wheel Drive: Removal And Installation

REMOVAL 

NOTE:

Mark the propeller to transmission output flange for assembly reference.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle

    Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .

  2. Remove the driveshaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  3. Using a suitable punch, remove the staking (1) from the nut.
  4. Remove the output flange nut using a 34 mm 12 point socket and (special tool #C-3281, Holder, Flange)to hold the flange (3).

  5. Remove the output shaft seal (1) using a suitable screw attachment and slide hammer.

INSTALLATION 

CAUTION:

The seal must be installed flush with the case. Driving the seal deeper could damage the seal causing a leak.

  1. Position the new output shaft seal (1) over the output shaft and against the transmission case.

  2. Using (special tool #8481, Installer, Gear) (1) and (special tool #C-4171-3, Seal Driver Handle, Short) (2) install the output shaft seal.
  3. Verify that the transmission is in PARK in order to install the output shaft nut.

  4. Install the output flange (3) on the output shaft and install a NEW  flange nut. Tighten the nut, with a 34 mm 12 point socket, to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. Stake (1) the nut using a suitable punch.
  6. Install the driveshaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  7. Verify the oil is filled to the proper level using the specified fluid. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
