Rear Wheel Drive: Removal And Installation

REMOVAL
NOTE:
Mark the propeller to transmission output flange for assembly reference.
- Raise and support the vehicle
Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.
- Using a suitable punch, remove the staking (1) from the nut.
- Remove the output flange nut using a 34 mm 12 point socket and (special tool #C-3281, Holder, Flange)to hold the flange (3).
- Remove the output shaft seal (1) using a suitable screw attachment and slide hammer.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION:
The seal must be installed flush with the case. Driving the seal deeper could damage the seal causing a leak.
- Position the new output shaft seal (1) over the output shaft and against the transmission case.
- Using (special tool #8481, Installer, Gear) (1) and (special tool #C-4171-3, Seal Driver Handle, Short) (2) install the output shaft seal.
- Verify that the transmission is in PARK in order to install the output shaft nut.
- Install the output flange (3) on the output shaft and install a NEW flange nut. Tighten the nut, with a 34 mm 12 point socket, to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Stake (1) the nut using a suitable punch.
- Install the driveshaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Verify the oil is filled to the proper level using the specified fluid. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
