Draining And Filling The Low Temperature (LT) Cooling System

NOTE:

DO NOT WASTE reusable coolant. If the solution is clean, drain the coolant into a clean retainer for reuse. 

Draining Procedure 

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Remove the engine belly pan

    Refer to BELLY PAN, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or BELLY PAN, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or BELLY PAN, SIDE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

    WARNING:

    DO NOT REMOVE THE COOLING SYSTEM PRESSURE CAP WITH THE SYSTEM HOT AND UNDER PRESSURE BECAUSE SERIOUS BURNS FROM COOLANT CAN OCCUR.

  3. With the engine cold, remove the LT coolant reservoir cap (1).

  4. Position a suitable container for collecting the coolant.
  5. Open the primary LT radiator drain plug (1).

  6. Open the secondary LT radiator drain plug (1).
  7. When they are completely drained, close the plugs of the two radiators.

Filling Procedure

  1. Open the bleed screw (1) on the primary LT radiator.

  2. Open the bleed screw (1) on the secondary LT radiator (1).
  3. Fill the cooling system with prescribed coolant until fluid is coming out of the two bleed screws and tighten the bleed screws. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. When refilling is complete, the level will be flush with the filler.
  5. Close the coolant reservoir cap.
  6. Connect the diagnosis equipment to the vehicle diagnosis socket, activate the electric pump at 75% of its power and let it run for about 15 minutes.
    NOTE:

    If there is a noticeable level drop in the coolant reservoir during this step, switch off the electric pump, open the cap very carefully and top up the fluid to the MAX level; then close the cap fully and complete bleeding the air from the system, keeping the electric pump powered at 75%.

  7. Switch off the power to the electric pump.

  8. Open only the bleed screw on the secondary LT radiator to eliminate any residual air.
  9. Install the engine belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or BELLY PAN, REAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or BELLY PAN, SIDE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  10. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
