Description And Operation

The exterior lamps and lighting system is managed by the Body Control Module (BCM).

FRONT EXTERIOR LAMPS AND LIGHTING 

Three range levels of headlamp units are available:

Basic Level - Halogen

Rear of Headlamp 

  1. Horizontal adjustment hexagonal screw
  2. Vertical adjustment hexagonal screw
  3. Headlamp wiring harness connector
  4. Ballest HDU (Xenon 35W) - activates the Xenon ballast
  5. DRL/Side marker light optical fiber control unit - the DRL control unit activates the direction indicators and sends the light activation message to the optical fiber control unit
  6. LED direction indicator control relay

Headlamp Adjustment Motors:

  1. Horizontal adjustment motor
  2. Vertical adjustment motor

The following recovering conditions are provided in case of faults to the vertical and horizontal adjustment motors:

The headlight will be blocked in the current position also in case of faults to the Local Interface Network (LIN).

The headlight is equipped with 35W Xenon bulbs (high beam/low beam) and requires automatic vertical adjustment. Two sensors are present on the right side of the vehicle for detecting the suspension position. The 35W headlight also implements the adaptive function managed by the Adaptive Front Light Module (AFLM) for vertically adjusting the light beam according to the steering angle. This system is known as the Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS).

AFLS Module - In addition to managing the horizontal movement of the Xenon bulb, the AFLS module directly detects the suspension position by means of the two front and rear sensors shown above. According to these signals, the AFLS instructs (using two different LIN buses) the right and left vertical adjustment motors to vertically adjust the headlights and change their position. The AFLS is the master while the two control units are the slave. The AFLS receives the steering angle and vehicle speed parameters via CAN according to which it instructs the control units that manage the right and left horizontal movement to implement the appropriate adjustments that allow the headlamp beam to follow the bend.

The AFLM modifies its sensitivity level and reactivity according to vehicle speed and bend radius. The AFLS implements four different sensitivity levels:

  1. Very close level: for speeds in the 0-5 km/h range; bends of 6-20m (parking manoeuvres)
  2. Close level: for speeds in the 5-50km/h range; bends of 10-50m (driving in cities)
  3. Medium level: for speeds in the 50-100km/h range; bends of 40-300m (extra-urban driving)
  4. Distant level: speed greater than 100km/h; bends of 250-500m (freeways)

The four sensitivity levels of the AFLM allow the unit to calculate the right speed for turning the Xenon headlights horizontally so as to follow the correct bending of the road without dark shadows. The BCM instructs the right and left DRL control units to activate the direction indicator and DRL LEDs.

To service the AFLM. Refer to MODULE, ADAPTIVE FRONT LIGHTING SYSTEM (AFLS), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . When the AFLS module is replaced, the diagnostic scan tool needs to be used to calibrate the AFLS. Using the scan tool, select the AFLS and then the "Misc Functions" menu. Select and start the "AFLS Calibration" routine. Follow the on-screen instruction to complete this procedure.

NOTE:

The Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system, when equipped, is integrated in the Smart Beam function which automatically switches from high beam to low beam when crossing the light beam of a vehicle approaching in the opposite direction.

Left Multifucntion Switch/Left Stalk

The left stalk is used to operate the right and left direction indicators. The indicators are activated in the usual manner by moving the stalk upwards or downwards. Unlike normal operation, the stalk does not click and hold the selected position downwards or upwards when a direction indicator is selected. The only stable position of the left stalk is the central position. When the left direction indicator is operated (for example) and the steering wheel is turned to bend, the stalk will instantaneously go back to the central stable position. The direction indicator will not be deactivated when the steering wheel is realigned in straight position. The stalk must be tipped downwards to deactivate the direction indicator.

The high beams are activated by moving the stalk forward. The high beam flash spot function is operated by pulling the stalk towards the driver. Both positions (forwards and backwards) are toggle positions.

FRONT FOG LAMPS 

The front fog lights are available on all versions, except for Quadrifoglio. The fog lights are not compatible with mid or top level headlamps because of the presence of SBL LEDs. The fog lights are powered directly by the BCM.

The fog lights are adjusted manually by inserting a screwdriver or a similar tool in the hole in the bottom of the fog lights themselves.

REAR EXTERIOR LAMPS AND LIGHTING 

The rear tail lamps use LEDs only. The rear tail lamps clusters consists of a inboard part and an outboard tail lamp.

The inboard tail lamp (2) and the outboard tail lamp (1) are secured to the vehicle by snap fittings (no screws).

Rear exterior lamps and lighting wiring diagram 

The traditional brake pedal switch is missing from the pedal assembly. The pedal pressed signal is detected by the ESC module which detects the pressure in the braking circuit.

HEADLAMP CONTROL SWITCH 

The headlamp control switch panel is integrated to the instrument panel on driver's side which also includes the Electronic Stop Start (ESS) (if equipped) and front Park Assistance System (PAS) sensor ON/OFF switches. The switch is connected to the BCM. The headlamp control switch panel configuration depends on the trim level of the vehicle.
