DTC U0029-00: CAN Gateway F-CAN ch A Bus Off (V6, Without SH-AWD, With CAN gateway) (2015-17)

DTC Description DTC
U0029-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch A Bus Off  

DTC (CAN gateway)

  1. Problem verification

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    U0029-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch A Bus Off  

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 2.

    NO 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

  2. Shorted unit check (PCM)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    PCM connector A (51P)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 5. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 7. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 8. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    U0029-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch A Bus Off  

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 3.

    NO 

    Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (With SH-AWD), or PCM Removal and Installation (Without SH-AWD) , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (With SH-AWD), or PCM Removal and Installation (Without SH-AWD) .

  3. Shorted unit check (gauge control module)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Gauge control module 32P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 4.

    NO 

    Substitute a known-good gauge control module , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the gauge control module was substituted, replace the original gauge control module .

  4. Shorted unit check (TCM)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    TCM 58P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 5. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 7. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 8. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 5.

    NO 

    Update the TCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good TCM , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the TCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the TCM was substituted, replace the original TCM .

  5. Shorted unit check (VSA modulator-control unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 6.

    NO 

    Update the VSA modulator-control unit - Refer to: VSA Modulator-Control Unit Update (With SH-AWD), or VSA Modulator-Control Unit Update if it does not have the latest software, then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the VSA modulator-control unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 is indicated after the VSA modulator-control unit was updated, replace the VSA modulator-control unit - Refer to: VSA Modulator-Control Unit Removal and Installation (With SH-AWD), or VSA Modulator-Control Unit Removal and Installation .

  6. Shorted unit check (SBW shifter control module)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    SBW shifter control module 20P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 7.

    NO 

    Substitute a known-good SBW shifter control module , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the SBW shifter control module was substituted, replace the original SBW shifter control module .

  7. Shorted unit check (EPS control unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    EPS control unit connector A (11P)

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 8.

    NO 

    Update the EPS control unit if it does not have the latest software, then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the EPS control unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 is indicated after the EPS control unit was updated, replace the EPS control unit .

  8. Shorted unit check (steering angle sensor)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Steering angle sensor 4P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Substitute a known-good steering angle sensor , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the steering angle sensor was substituted, replace the original steering angle sensor .

  9. Shorted unit check (precision all wheel steer control unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Precision all wheel steer control unit connector A (16P)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 5. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 7. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 8. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 10.

    NO 

    Update the precision all wheel steer control unit if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good precision all wheel steer control unit , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the precision all wheel steer control unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the precision all wheel steer control unit was substituted, replace the original precision all wheel steer control unit .

  10. Shorted unit check (electric parking brake control unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Electric parking brake control unit 30P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 11.

    NO 

    Update the electric parking brake control unit if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good electric parking brake control unit , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the electric parking brake control unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the electric parking brake control unit was substituted, replace the original electric parking brake control unit .

  11. Shorted unit check (multipurpose camera unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Multipurpose camera unit 20P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 12.

    NO 

    Update the multipurpose camera unit if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good multipurpose camera unit , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the multipurpose camera unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the multipurpose camera unit was substituted, replace the original multipurpose camera unit .

  12. Shorted unit check (SRS unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure, and wait for at least 3 minutes.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    SRS unit connector A (39P)

    - 4. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 6. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 7. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 8. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 9. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 13.

    NO 

    Update the SRS unit if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good SRS unit - Refer to: SRS Unit Removal and Installation, or SRS Unit Removal and Installation (2018-19) , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the SRS unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the SRS unit was substituted, replace the original SRS unit - Refer to: SRS Unit Removal and Installation, or SRS Unit Removal and Installation (2018-19) .

  13. Shorted unit check (driver's E-pretensioner unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure, and wait for at least 3 minutes.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector

    - 4. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 6. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 7. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 8. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 9. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 14.

    NO 

    Update the E-pretensioner unit if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good driver's E-pretensioner unit , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the driver's E-pretensioner unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the driver's E-pretensioner unit was substituted, replace the original driver's E-pretensioner unit .

  14. Shorted unit check (front passenger's E-pretensioner unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure, and wait for at least 3 minutes.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Front passenger's E-pretensioner unit 14P connector

    - 4. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 6. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 7. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 8. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 9. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 15.

    NO 

    Update the E-pretensioner unit if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good front passenger's E-pretensioner unit , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the front passenger's E-pretensioner unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the front passenger's E-pretensioner unit was substituted, replace the original front passenger's E-pretensioner unit .

  15. Shorted wire check (F-CAN A_H line)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    CAN gateway 24P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
    Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected
    TCM 58P connector: disconnected
    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
    SBW shifter control module 20P connector: disconnected
    EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
    Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
    Precision all wheel steer control unit connector A (16P): disconnected
    Electric parking brake control unit 30P connector: disconnected
    Multipurpose camera unit 20P connector: disconnected
    SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
    Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector: disconnected
    Front passenger's E-pretensioner unit 14P connector: disconnected
    CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 14
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Repair a short in the F-CAN A_H wire between the CAN gateway and the connected units.

    NO 

    The F-CAN A_H wire is not short to ground. Go to step 16.

  16. Shorted wire check (F-CAN A_L line)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
    Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected
    TCM 58P connector: disconnected
    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
    SBW shifter control module 20P connector: disconnected
    EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
    Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
    Precision all wheel steer control unit connector A (16P): disconnected
    Electric parking brake control unit 30P connector: disconnected
    Multipurpose camera unit 20P connector: disconnected
    SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
    Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector: disconnected
    Front passenger's E-pretensioner unit 14P connector: disconnected
    CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 15
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Repair a short in the F-CAN A_L wire between the CAN gateway and the connected units.

    NO 

    The F-CAN A_L wire is not short to ground. Go to step 17.

  17. Shorted wire check (F-CAN A_H line to F-CAN A_L line)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
    Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected
    TCM 58P connector: disconnected
    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
    SBW shifter control module 20P connector: disconnected
    EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
    Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
    Precision all wheel steer control unit connector A (16P): disconnected
    Electric parking brake control unit 30P connector: disconnected
    Multipurpose camera unit 20P connector: disconnected
    SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
    Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector: disconnected
    Front passenger's E-pretensioner unit 14P connector: disconnected
    CAN gateway 24P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 14
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 24P connector No. 15

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Repair a short in the F-CAN A_H wire to the F-CAN A_L wire between CAN gateway terminals No. 14 and No. 15.

    NO 

    Update the CAN gateway if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good CAN gateway , then recheck. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the CAN gateway was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If DTC U0029-00 goes away and the CAN gateway was substituted, replace the original CAN gateway .
