DTC U0029-00: CAN Gateway F-CAN ch A Bus Off (CAN Gateway (L4)) (2018-19)

NOTE:  Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information - Refer to: How to Troubleshoot the Fuel and Emissions Systems (L4), or How to Troubleshoot the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), or How to Troubleshoot the Brake Booster Pressure Monitoring System (With Auto Idle Stop System) .

U0029-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch A Bus Off  

DTC (CAN gateway)

  1. Problem verification

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 2.

    NO 

    Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

  2. Shorted unit check (PCM)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS, and wait more than 1 minute.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    PCM connector A (51P)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 5. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 7. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 8. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 3.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (With SH-AWD), or PCM Removal and Installation (Without SH-AWD) .

  3. Shorted unit check (gauge control module)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Gauge control module 32P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 4.

    NO 

    Substitute a known-good gauge control module .

  4. Shorted unit check (audio-navigation unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P)

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 5.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or Substitute a known-good audio-navigation unit .

  5. Shorted unit check (ANC/active sound control unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 6.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or Substitute a known-good ANC/active sound control unit .

  6. Shorted unit check (VSA modulator-control unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    U0029-00 CAN Gateway F-CAN ch A Bus Off  

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 7.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or Substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit - Refer to: VSA Modulator-Control Unit Removal and Installation (With SH-AWD), or VSA Modulator-Control Unit Removal and Installation .

  7. Shorted unit check (EPS control unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    EPS control unit connector A (11P)

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 8.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or Substitute a known-good EPS control unit .

  8. Shorted unit check (steering angle sensor)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Steering angle sensor 4P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or Substitute a known-good steering angle sensor .

  9. Shorted unit check (precision all wheel steer control unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS, and wait more than 1 minute.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Precision all wheel steer control unit connector A (16P)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 5. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 7. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 8. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 10.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or Substitute a known-good precision all wheel steer control unit .

  10. Shorted unit check (electric parking brake control unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Electric parking brake control unit 30P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 11.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good electric parking brake control unit .

  11. Shorted unit check (multipurpose camera unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    Multipurpose camera unit 20P connector

    - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 4. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 6. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 7. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    YES 

    Go to step 12.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good multipurpose camera unit .

  12. Shorted unit check (SRS unit)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure, and wait for at least 3 minutes.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    SRS unit connector A (39P)

    - 4. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure.

    - 5. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 6. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

    - 7. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 8. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and wait 6 seconds.

    - 9. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC U0029-00 indicated?

    1. YES 

      • Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good keyless access/TPMS control unit, then recheck.
      • If the original keyless access/TPMS control unit is OK, go to step 13.

      NO 

      Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good SRS unit - Refer to: SRS Unit Removal and Installation, or SRS Unit Removal and Installation (2018-19) .

  13. Shorted wire check (F-CAN A_H line)

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

    CAN gateway 16P connector

    - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
    Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected
    Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P): disconnected
    ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
    EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
    Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
    Precision all wheel steer control unit connector A (16P): disconnected
    Electric parking brake control unit 30P connector: disconnected
    Multipurpose camera unit 20P connector: disconnected
    SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
    Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector A (20P): disconnected
    CAN gateway 16P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 CAN gateway 16P connector (female terminals) No. 3:
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Repair a short in the F-CAN A_H wire between the CAN gateway and the connected units.

    NO 

    The F-CAN A_H wire is not short to ground. Go to step 14.

  14. Shorted wire check (F-CAN A_L line)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
    Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected
    Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P): disconnected
    ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
    EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
    Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
    Precision all wheel steer control unit connector A (16P): disconnected
    Electric parking brake control unit 30P connector: disconnected
    Multipurpose camera unit 20P connector: disconnected
    SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
    Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector A (20P): disconnected
    CAN gateway 16P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 CAN gateway 16P connector (female terminals) No. 11:
    Test point 2 Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Repair a short in the F-CAN A_L wire between the CAN gateway and the connected units.

    NO 

    The F-CAN A_L wire is not short to ground. Go to step 15.

  15. Shorted wire check (F-CAN A_H line to F-CAN A_L line)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
    Gauge control module 32P connector: disconnected
    Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P): disconnected
    ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
    EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
    Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
    Precision all wheel steer control unit connector A (16P): disconnected
    Electric parking brake control unit 30P connector: disconnected
    Multipurpose camera unit 20P connector: disconnected
    SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
    Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector A (20P): disconnected
    CAN gateway 16P connector: disconnected
    Test point 1 CAN gateway 16P connector (female terminals) No. 3:
    Test point 2 CAN gateway 16P connector (female terminals) No. 11:

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Repair a short in the F-CAN A_H wire to the F-CAN A_L wire between CAN gateway terminals No. 3 and No. 11.

    NO 

    Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good CAN gateway .
