Paddle Shifter + (Upshift Switch) Illumination Circuit Troubleshooting
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations and the precautions and procedures before doing repair or service.
- Fuse check
-1. Check the following fuse.
Fuse No. E15 (7.5 A) Location Passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box Is the fuse OK?
YES
The fuse is OK. Go to step 2.
NO
Replace the No. E15 (7.5 A) fuse, and recheck. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground on the No. E15 (7.5 A) fuse circuit, and recheck.
- Determine possible failure area (paddle shifter + (upshift switch), others)
-1. Remove the driver's airbag .
-2. Disconnect the following connector.
Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector -3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-4. Turn the combination light switch to the PARKING (SMALL) position.
-5. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle ON mode Combination light switch PARKING (SMALL) position Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Test circuit ILL- (LED), ILL+ Test point 1 Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 3 (PUR) Test point 2 Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 4 (YEL) Is there battery voltage?
YES
Replace the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) .
NO
Go to step 3.
- Determine possible failure area (ILL+ line, others)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Disconnect the following connector.
Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) -3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle ON mode Combination light switch PARKING (SMALL) position Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Test circuit GND, +B Test point 1 Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) No. 1 (BLK) Test point 2 Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) No. 16 (WHT) Is there battery voltage?
YES
Go to step 4.
NO
Go to step 9.
- Shorted wire check (ILL+ line)
-1. Turn the combination light switch to the OFF position.
-2. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Test circuit ILL+ Test point 1 Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 4 (YEL) Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
Repair a short to ground in the ILL+ wire between the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) and the steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P), or replace the cable reel subharness .
NO
Go to step 5.
- Determine possible failure area (open in ILL+ line, others)
-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Test circuit ILL+ Test point 1 Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 4 (YEL) Test point 2 Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) No. 12 (YEL) Is there continuity?
YES
Go to step 7.
NO
Go to step 6.
- Open wire check (ILL+ line)
-1. Disconnect the following connector.
Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P) -2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P): disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Test circuit ILL+ Test point 1 Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P) No. 5 Test point 2 Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P) No. 10 Is there continuity?
YES
Repair an open in the ILL+ wire between the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) and the steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P), or replace the cable reel subharness .
NO
The ILL+ wire is OK. Replace the steering commander switch assembly .
- Determine possible failure area (steering commander switch assembly, others)
-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Test circuit ILL- (LED) Test point 1 Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 3 (PUR) Test point 2 Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) No. 13 (PUR) Is there continuity?
YES
Replace the steering commander switch assembly .
NO
Go to step 8.
- Open wire check (ILL- (LED) line)
-1. Disconnect the following connector.
Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P) -2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P): disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Test circuit ILL- (LED) Test point 1 Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P) No. 4 Test point 2 Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P) No. 9 Is there continuity?
YES
Repair an open in the ILL- (LED) wire between the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) and the steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P), or replace the cable reel subharness .
NO
The ILL- (LED) wire is OK. Replace the steering commander switch assembly .
- Shorted wire check (+B line)
-1. Turn the combination light switch to the OFF position.
-2. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-3. Disconnect the following connector.
Cable reel connector C (20P) -4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected Test circuit +B Test point 1 Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) No. 16 (WHT) Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
Repair a short to ground in the +B wire between the steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) and cable reel connector C (20P), or replace the cable reel subharness .
NO
Go to step 10.
- Open wire check (+B line)
-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected Test circuit +B Test point 1 Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) No. 16 (WHT) Test point 2 Cable reel connector C (20P) No. 14 (WHT) Is there continuity?
YES
The +B wire is OK. Go to step 11.
NO
Repair an open in the +B wire between the steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) and cable reel connector C (20P), or replace the cable reel subharness .
- Determine possible failure area (GND line, others)
-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected Test circuit GND Test point 1 Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) No. 1 (BLK) Test point 2 Cable reel connector C (20P) No. 11 (BLK) Is there continuity?
YES
Go to step 13.
NO
Go to step 12.
- Open wire check (GND line)
-1. Disconnect the following connector.
Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P) -2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P): disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected Test circuit GND Test point 1 Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P) No. 1 Test point 2 Steering commander switch assembly connector A (16P) No. 3 Is there continuity?
YES
Repair an open in the GND wire between the steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P) and cable reel connector C (20P), or replace the cable reel subharness .
NO
The GND wire is OK. Replace the steering commander switch assembly .
- Determine possible failure area (cable reel, others)
-1. Remove the cable reel .
-2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
-3. Turn the combination light switch to the PARKING (SMALL) position.
-4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

YES
NO
Go to step 14.
- Open wire check (GND line)
-1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
-2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected Steering commander switch assembly connector B (16P): disconnected Cable reel connector A (20P): disconnected Cable reel connector C (20P): disconnected Test circuit GND Test point 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 1 (BLK) Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
The GND wire is OK. Repair an open in the +B GLOVE BOX wire between cable reel connector A (20P) and the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box.
NO
Repair an open in the GND wire between cable reel connector A (20P) and ground (G501), or repair poor ground (G501).
