DTC B2858-14 : Driver's E-Pretensioner Motor Circuit Open or Short to Ground
NOTE:
- Before doing this troubleshooting procedure, review General Troubleshooting Information .
- Before replacing the E-pretensioner unit, check the E-pretensioner unit software version with the HDS. If the software version is not the latest, update the E-pretensioner unit software , and retest.
- When you replace the E-pretensioner unit, check the HDS and replace the indicated side of E-pretensioner unit on the HDS.

DTC (E-pretensioner)
- Problem verification
- 1. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.
- 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
- 3. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
DTC Description DTC B2858-14 Driver's E-Pretensioner Motor Circuit Open or Short to Ground Is DTC B2858-14 indicated?
YES
The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.
NO
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting.
- Determine possible failure area (L EPT MTR + line, L EPT MTR - line)
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Disconnect the following connector.
Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
- 4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle ON mode Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector: disconnected Test circuit L EPT MTR + Test point 1 Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector No. 1 (RED) Test point 2 Body ground Is there 0.2 V or less?
YES
Go to step 5.
NO
Go to step 3.
- Open wire check (L EPT MTR - line) 1
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector: disconnected Test circuit L EPT MTR - Test point 1 Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector No. 2 (YEL) Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
The L EPT MTR - wire is OK. Faulty driver's E-pretensioner motor; replace the driver's seat belt .
NO
Go to step 4.
- Open wire check (L EPT MTR - line) 2
- 1. Disconnect the following connector.
Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector: disconnected Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector: disconnected Test circuit L EPT MTR - Test point 1 Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector No. 2 (YEL) Test point 2 Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector No. 3 (YEL) Is there continuity?
YES
The L EPT MTR - wire is OK. Replace the E-pretensioner unit .
NO
Repair an open in the wire between the driver's E-pretensioner unit and the driver's E-pretensioner motor.
- Shorted wire check (L EPT MTR + line)
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Disconnect the following connector.
Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector: disconnected Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector: disconnected Test circuit L EPT MTR + Test point 1 E-pretensioner unit connector A (16P) No. 2 (RED) Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
Repair a short to ground in the wire between the driver's E-pretensioner unit and the driver's E-pretensioner motor.
NO
Go to step 6.
- Open wire check (L EPT MTR line)
- 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector: disconnected Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector: disconnected Test circuit L EPT MTR + Test point 1 Driver's E-pretensioner motor 2P connector No. 1 (RED) Test point 2 Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector No. 2 (RED) Is there continuity?
YES
The L EPT MTR + wire is OK. Replace the E-pretensioner unit .
NO
Repair an open in the wire between the driver's E-pretensioner unit and the driver's E-pretensioner spool sensor.
