Electrical Compass Troubleshooting (2017 2018 2019 2020)

NOTE: 

• Check the vehicle battery condition first - Refer to: Battery Test (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .
• Check the connectors for poor connections or loose terminals.

1. Problem verification 1

   - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

   - 2. Check if the azimuth (direction) information is displayed in the audio display unit.

   Is the azimuth (direction) information displayed?

   YES 

   Go to step 2.

   NO 

   Go to step 6.

2. Problem verification 2

   - 1. Check if the audio display unit is flashing the CAL and NW.

   Is the CAL and NW flashing?

   YES 

   Replace the electrical compass unit .

   NO 

   Go to step 3.

3. Problem verification 3

   - 1. Do the Electrical Compass Calibration.

   Is the calibration completed?

   YES 

   Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

   NO 

   Go to step 4.

4. Determine possible failure area (electrical compass unit, others)

   - 1. Go into the System Diagnostic Mode, and select the Car Status in the System Links to check the vehicle speed pulse.

   - 2. With the help of an assistant, test-drive the vehicle and watch the VSP signal.

   Does self-diagnostic function indicate a vehicle speed?

   YES 

   Replace the electrical compass unit .

   NO 

   Go to step 5.

5. Open wire check (B-CAN_H line, B-CAN_L line)

   - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

   - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

   Audio unit connector A (24P)

   Gauge control module 32P connector

   - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Audio unit connector A (24P): disconnected
   	Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected

   Test point 1	Audio unit connector A (24P) No. 4 - Refer to: Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017), or Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2018 2019 2020)
   Test point 2	Gauge control module connector A (32P) (female terminals) No. 25:

   Test point 1	Audio unit connector A (24P) No. 2 - Refer to: Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017), or Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2018 2019 2020)
   Test point 2	Gauge control module connector A (32P) (female terminals) No. 26:

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Replace the audio unit .

   NO 

   Repair an open in the wire(s).

6. Open wire check (IG1 METER line)

   - 1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

   - 2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle ON mode
   Test point 1	Electrical compass unit 6P connector No. 6 - Refer to: Electrical Compass Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018 2019 2020)
   Test point 2	Body ground

   Is there battery voltage?

   YES 

   The IG1 METER wire is OK. Go to step 7.

   NO 

   Repair an open or high resistance in the wire.

7. Open wire check (GND line)

   - 1. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle ON mode
   Test point 1	Electrical compass unit 6P connector No. 5 - Refer to: Electrical Compass Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018 2019 2020)
   Test point 2	Body ground

   Is there less than 0.2 V?

   YES 

   The GND wire is OK. Go to step 8.

   NO 

   Repair an open or high resistance in the wire or poor ground (G502).

8. Shorted wire check (COMPASS lines)

   - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

   - 2. Disconnect the following connectors.

   Audio unit connector C (20P)

   Electrical compass unit 6P connector

   - 3. Check for continuity between these test points and body ground individually.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Audio unit connector C (20P): disconnected
   	Electrical compass unit 6P connector: disconnected

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Repair a short to body ground in the wire(s).

   NO 

   Go to step 9.

9. Open wire check (COMPASS lines)

   - 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Audio unit connector C (20P): disconnected
   	Electrical compass unit 6P connector: disconnected

   Test circuit	Test point 1:  Audio unit connector C (20P) - Refer to: Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017) or Audio Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2018 2019 2020), .	Test point 2:  Electrical compass unit 6P connector - Refer to: Electrical Compass Unit Connector for Inputs and Outputs (2017 2018 2019 2020) .
   COMPASS 1	No. 9	No. 4
   COMPASS 2	No. 10	No. 3
   COMPASS 3	No. 19	No. 2
   COMPASS 4	No. 20	No. 1

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   The COMPASS wires are OK. Go to step 10.

   NO 

   Repair an open in the wire(s).

10. Electrical compass unit check

    - 1. Substitute a known-good electrical compass unit.

    - 2. Reconnect all the connectors, and recheck.

    Does the symptom go away?

    YES 

    Replace the original electrical compass unit .

    NO 

    Replace the audio unit .
