Paddle Shifter Circuit Troubleshooting
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations - Refer to: SRS Component Location Index (2014 2015 2016), or SRS Component Location Index (2017 2018 2019 2020) and the precautions and procedures before doing repair or service.
NOTE: Information marked with an asterisk (*1) applies to the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) line, and an asterisk (*2) applies to the paddle shifter - (downshift switch) line.
- Problem verification
- 1. Connect the HDS to the DLC.
- 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
- 3. Check the parameter(s) below with the HDS when repeatedly pressing and releasing the paddle shifter.
Signal Current conditions Values Unit Upshift Switch (ST) Downshift Switch (ST) Is ON indicated when you are pressing the paddle shifter and OFF with the paddle shifter released?
YES
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.
NO
The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.
- Determine possible failure area (TCM, others)
- 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
- 3. Disconnect the following connector.
TCM 58P connector - 4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode TCM 58P connector: disconnected Test point 1 TCM 58P connector No. 29 * 1 Test point 2 Body ground Test point 1 TCM 58P connector No. 28 * 2 Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity when pressing the paddle shifter - (downshift switch) and no continuity when the paddle shifter - (downshift switch) is released?
YES
The SUPP wire* 1/SDNP wire* 2 is OK. Update the TCM if it does not have the latest software , or substitute a known-good TCM , then recheck. If the symptom goes away and the TCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the symptom goes away and the TCM was substituted, replace the original TCM .
NO
Go to step 3.
- Determine possible failure area (SUPP line* 1, SDNP line* 2, others):
- 1.Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Remove the steering wheel.
- 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected Test point 1 Cable reel connector D (20P) No. 12 * 1 Test point 2 Cable reel connector D (20P) No. 18 * 1 Test point 1 Cable reel connector D (20P) No. 13 * 2 Test point 2 Cable reel connector D (20P) No. 15 * 2 Is there continuity when pressing the paddle shifter - (downshift switch) and no continuity when the paddle shifter - (downshift switch) is released?
YES
Go to step 5.
NO
Go to step 4.
- Paddle shifter operation check
- 1. Disconnect the following connector.
Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector* 1 Paddle shifter - (downshift switch) 4P connector* 2 - 2. Test the paddle shifter.
Is the paddle shifter OK?
YES
The paddle shifter is OK. Replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .
NO
Replace the paddle shifter - Refer to: Paddle Shifter Removal and Installation (2014 2015), or Paddle Shifter Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .
- Open wire check (SGND line)
- 1. Remove the cable reel.
- 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected Cable reel connector A (20P): disconnected TCM 58P connector: disconnected Test point 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 1 Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
The SGND wire is OK. Go to step 6.
NO
Repair an open in the SGND wire between the paddle shifter and ground (G507), or repair poor ground (G507).
- Shorted wire check (SUPP line* 1, SDNP line* 2):
- 1.Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected Cable reel connector A (20P): disconnected TCM 58P connector: disconnected Test point 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 6* 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 3* 2 Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
Repair a short to ground in the SUPP wire* 1/SDNP wire* 2 between the paddle shifter and the TCM.
NO
The SUPP wire* 1/SDNP wire* 2 is not shorted. Go to step 7.
- Determine possible failure area (cable reel, others)
- 1. Reconnect TCM 58P connector.
- 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
- 3. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition Vehicle ON mode Cable reel connector A (20P): disconnected Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected Test point 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 1 Test point 2 Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 6* 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 3 * 2 Is there battery voltage?
YES
NO
Go to step 8.
- Open wire check (SUPP line* 1, SDNP line* 2):
- 1.Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
- 2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
- 3. Disconnect the following connector.
TCM 58P connector - 4. Connect terminals A and B with a jumper wire.
Terminals A Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 6* 1 Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 3* 2 Terminals B Body ground - 5. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

YES
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections and loose terminals at the TCM. If the freeze data/on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the freeze data/on-board snapshot.
NO
Repair an open in the SUPP wire* 1/SDNP wire* 2 between the paddle shifter and the TCM.
