Paddle Shifter + (Upshift Switch) Illumination Circuit Troubleshooting

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations - Refer to: SRS Component Location Index (2014 2015 2016), or SRS Component Location Index (2017 2018 2019 2020) and the precautions and procedures before doing repair or service.

NOTE: 

• Troubleshoot any fuel and emissions DTCs first.
• If all illuminations of switches on the steering wheel do not come on simultaneously, check for a blown No. C10 (10 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box. Replace the No. C10 (10 A) fuse if it is blown, and recheck. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to body ground in the No. C10 (10 A) fuse circuit.

1. Determine possible failure area (paddle shifter + (upshift switch), others)

   - 1. Remove the driver's airbag.

   - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

   Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector - Refer to: Paddle Shifter Removal and Installation (2014 2015), or Paddle Shifter Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020)

   - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

   - 4. Turn the combination light switch to the PARKING (SMALL) position.

   - 5. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle ON mode
   	Combination light switch PARKING (SMALL) position
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
   Test circuit	R STRG ILL-, R STRG ILL+
   Test point 1	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 3 (GRY)
   Test point 2	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 4 (RED)

   Is there battery voltage?

   YES 

   Replace the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) - Refer to: Paddle Shifter Removal and Installation (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Paddle Shifter Removal and Installation (2014 2015) .

   NO 

   Go to step 2.

2. Determine possible failure area (R STRG ILL+ line, others)

   - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

   - 2. Disconnect the following connector.

   Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P)

   - 3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

   - 4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle ON mode
   	Combination light switch PARKING (SMALL) position
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
   	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test circuit	SGND, +B BACK UP
   Test point 1	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 1 (BLK)
   Test point 2	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 16 (GRN)

   Is there battery voltage?

   YES 

   Go to step 3.

   NO 

   Go to step 9.

3. Shorted wire check (R STRG ILL+ line)

   - 1. Turn the combination light switch to the OFF position.

   - 2. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

   - 3. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
   	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test circuit	R STRG ILL+
   Test point 1	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 4 (RED)
   Test point 2	Body ground

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Repair a short to ground in the R STRG ILL+ wire between the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) and the audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .

   NO 

   Go to step 4.

4. Determine possible failure area (open in R STRG ILL+ line, others)

   - 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
   	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test circuit	R STRG ILL+
   Test point 1	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 4 (RED)
   Test point 2	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 12 (RED)

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   The R STRG ILL+ wire is OK. Go to step 6.

   NO 

   Go to step 5.

5. Cruise control combination switch check

   - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

   Cruise control combination switch connector (16P)

   - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
   	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test circuit	R STRG ILL+
   Test point 1	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 5
   Test point 2	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 10

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Repair an open in the R STRG ILL+ wire between the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) and the audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

   NO 

   The R STRG ILL+ wire is OK. Replace the cruise control combination switch .

6. Open wire check (R STRG ILL- line)

   - 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
   	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test circuit	R STRG ILL-
   Test point 1	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector No. 3 (GRY)
   Test point 2	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 13 (GRY)

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Go to step 8.

   NO 

   Go to step 7.

7. Cruise control combination switch check

   - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

   Cruise control combination switch connector (16P)

   - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
   	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
   Test circuit	R STRG ILL-
   Test point 1	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 4
   Test point 2	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 9

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Repair an open in the R STRG ILL- wire between the paddle shifter + (upshift switch) and the audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

   NO 

   The R STRG ILL- wire is OK. Replace the cruise control combination switch .

8. Open wire check (LIN (METER) line)

   - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

   Cable reel connector D (20P)

   - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
   	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
   	Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected
   Test circuit	LIN (METER)
   Test point 1	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P) No. 14 (BLU)
   Test point 2	Cable reel connector D (20P) No. 19 (BLU)

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   Repair the audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch .

   NO 

   Repair an open in the LIN (METER) wire between the audio remote switch, or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015) .

9. Open wire check (+B BACK UP line)

   - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

   Cable reel connector D (20P)

   - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

   Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
   	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
   	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected

   	Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected
   Test circuit	+B BACK UP
   Test point 1	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch No. 16 (GRN)
   Test point 2	Cable reel connector D (20P) No. 14 (GRN)

   Is there continuity?

   YES 

   The +B wire is OK. Go to step 10.

   NO 

   Repair an open in the +B BACK UP wire between the audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P) and cable reel connector D (20P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .

10. Open wire check (SGND line)

    - 1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
    	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Cable reel connector D (20P): disconnected
    Test circuit	SGND
    Test point 1	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected No. 1 (BLK)
    Test point 2	Cable reel connector D (20P) No. 11 (BLK)

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Go to step 12.

    NO 

    Go to step 11.

11. Cruise control combination switch check

    - 1. Disconnect the following connector.

    Cruise control combination switch connector (16P)

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
    	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
    Test circuit	SGND
    Test point 1	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 1
    Test point 2	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P) No. 3

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Repair an open in the SGND wire between the audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P) and cable reel connector D (20P), or replace the cable reel subharness - Refer to: Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2014 2015), or Steering Wheel Disassembly and Reassembly (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .

    NO 

    Replace the cruise control combination switch .

12. Determine possible failure area (cable reel, others)

    - 1. Remove the cable reel.

    - 2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    - 3. Turn the combination light switch to the PARKING (SMALL) position.

    - 4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle ON mode
    	Combination light switch PARKING (SMALL) position
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
    	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Cable reel connector A (20P)
    	Cable reel connector D (20P)
    Test circuit	SGND, +B BACK UP
    Test point 1	Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 1 (BRN)
    Test point 2	Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 2 (GRN)

    Is there battery voltage?

    YES 

    Replace the cable reel .

    NO 

    Go to step 13.

13. Open wire check (SGND line)

    - 1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition	Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
    	Paddle shifter + (upshift switch) 4P connector: disconnected
    	Audio remote/HFL-navigation voice control switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Cruise control combination switch connector (16P): disconnected
    	Cable reel connector A (20P)
    	Cable reel connector D (20P)

    Test circuit	SGND
    Test point 1	Cable reel connector A (20P) No. 1 (BRN)
    Test point 2	Body ground

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The SGND wire is OK. Repair an open in the +B BACK UP wire between cable reel connector A (20P) and the under - hood fuse/relay box.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the SGND wire between cable reel connector A (20P) and ground (G507), or repair poor ground (G507).
