HID Lamp System Troubleshooting
WARNING:
A transient high tension (25, 000 V) occurs at the bulb sockets of the high intensity discharge (HID) lamps when the combination light switch is turned ON, that may cause serious electrical shock or electrocution if you do not observe the cautions.
WARNING:
- Never turn on the combination light switch before fitting the HID bulbs to their bulb sockets and completing the reassembly of the headlight assembly.
- Do not service the headlights assembly in wet conditions, such as rain or snow, near a sprinkler system, or when your hands are wet to prevent electrocution.
- Do not touch the surface of the HID bulbs with your bare hands and do not stain it with any oils and fats.
- Do not disassemble the inverter unit and the igniter unit.
- Do not turn on the HID bulb by using a power source other than the battery mounted on the vehicle.
NOTE:
- Before troubleshooting, make sure the No. A20 (15 A) and No. A23 (15 A) fuses in the under-hood fuse/relay box are OK.
- Cool down the HID bulb before checking.
- After checking, the HID lamp system requires about 5 minutes to return to normal condition.
- Refer to the Electrical Wiring Diagrams for the location of the under-dash fuse/relay box connectors.
- Combination light switch and MICU check
-1. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) .
-2. Select LIGHTING from the BODY ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SELECT menu, and enter the FUNCTIONAL TESTS, then turn the headlights on repeatedly.
Inspection - Headlight Command
Do the headlights come on?
YES
Go to the combination light switch test .
YES
NO
Go to step 2.
- Connector check
-1. Turn the headlight switch OFF and the vehicle ignition to the OFF mode.
-2. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure .
-3. Remove the igniter from the HID bulb.
-4. Check for loose or poor connections between the igniter and the HID bulb.
Is the connection OK?
YES
Go to step 3.
NO
Install the bulb and the bulb socket on the igniter correctly and recheck, then do the battery terminal reconnection procedure .
- Bulb socket visual check
-1. Check for corrosion and traces of electrical arcing at the socket mating part (A).
Is the socket corroded or burnt?
YES
Replace the igniter, and recheck, then do the battery terminal reconnection procedure .
NO
Go to step 4.
- HID bulb visual check
-1. Remove the bulb, and check the luminous part of the HID bulb.
Is there black discoloration or transformation?
YES
Replace the HID bulb(s) , and recheck, then do the battery terminal reconnection procedure .
NO
Go to step 5.
- Determine possible failure area (HID bulb, others)
-1. Do the battery terminal reconnection procedure .
-2. Replace the right side HID bulb with the left side HID bulb.
Does the symptom change to the other side?
YES
NO
Go to step 6.
- Determine possible failure area (HID unit or GND line, others)
-1. Turn the combination light switch OFF.
-2. Disconnect the following connectors.
Left HID unit 2P connector Right HID unit 2P connector -3. Turn the combination light (headlight) switch ON.
-4. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2 individually.
Test condition OFF mode Left HID unit 2P connector: disconnected
Right HID unit 2P connector: disconnected
Test circuit L H/L LO Test point 1 Left HID unit 2P connector No. 1 (PUR) Test point 2 Body ground Test circuit R H/L LO Test point 1 Right HID unit 2P connector No. 1 (GRN) Test point 2 Body ground Is there battery voltage?
YES
Go to step 7.
NO
Go to step 8.
- Open wire check (GND line)
-1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2 individually.
Test condition OFF mode Left HID unit 2P connector: disconnected
Right HID unit 2P connector: disconnected
Test circuit GND Test point 1 Left HID unit 2P connector No. 2 (BLK) Test point 2 Body ground Test circuit GND Test point 1 Right HID unit 2P connector No. 2 (BLK) Test point 2 Body ground Is there continuity?
YES
The GND wire is OK. Replace the HID unit .
NO
Repair an open or high resistance in the ground wire or poor ground (G301 *1, G201 *2).*1: Left side*2: Right side
- Open wire check (L H/L LO, R H/L LO lines)
-1. Turn the combination light switch OFF.
-2. Disconnect the following connector.
Relay circuit board connector B (10P) -3. Connect terminals A and B with a jumper wire.
Terminal A Left HID unit 2P connector No. 1 (PUR) Terminal B Body ground Terminal A Right HID unit 2P connector No. 1 (GRN) Terminal B Body ground -4. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2 individually.
Test condition OFF modeLeft HID unit 2P connector: disconnected Left HID unit 2P connector: jumped to body ground
Right HID unit 2P connector: disconnected
Right HID unit 2P connector: jumped to body ground
Relay circuit board connector B (10P) : disconnected

YES
The L H/L LO and R H/L LO wires are OK. Go to step 9.
NO
Repair an open or high resistance in the wire.
- Relay circuit board check
-1. Do the relay circuit board test .
Is the relay circuit board OK?
YES
Go to step 10.
NO
- Open wire check (H/L LO CL- line)
-1. Disconnect the following connector.
Under-dash fuse/relay box connector D (32P) -2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition OFF mode Left HID unit 2P connector: disconnected
P connector: disconnectedRelay circuit board connector B
Right HID unit 2 (10P): disconnected
Under-dash fuse/relay box connector D (32P): disconnected
Test circuit H/L LO CL- Test point 1 Under-dash fuse/relay box connector D (32P) No. 29 (ORN) Test point 2 Relay circuit board connector B (10P) No. 9 (ORN) Is there continuity?
YES
Faulty MICU; replace the under-dash fuse/relay box .
NO
Repair an open or high resistance in the wire.
