F-CAN Circuit Troubleshooting (2014 2015)

F-CAN Circuit Troubleshooting 

  1. F-CAN circuit resistance check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    PCM connector A (51P) - Refer to: How to Troubleshoot the A/T System (2014 2015), or How to Troubleshoot the Fuel and Emissions Systems, .

    - 4. Measure the resistance between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition OFF mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
    Test circuit F-CAN_H, F-CAN_L
    Test point 1 PCM connector A (51P) No. 9 (WHT)
    Test point 2 PCM connector A (51P) No. 10 (BLK)

    Is there about 67-95 -?

    YES 

    Go to step 18

    NO 

    Go to step 2.

  2. Shorted wire check (F-CAN_H line to F-CAN_L line)

    -1. Disconnect the following connectors.

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected
      Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P): disconnected
      SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
      Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector (with ACC): disconnected
      Front passenger's E-pretensioner unit 14P connector (with ACC): disconnected
      ACC unit 20P (with ACC): disconnected
      LKAS camera/control unit 8P connector (with LKAS): disconnected
      FCW/LDW camera unit 10P connector (with FCW/LDW camera): disconnected
    Test circuit F-CAN_H, F-CAN_L
    Test point 1 PCM connector A (51P) No. 9 (WHT)
    Test point 2 PCM connector A (51P) No. 10 (BLK)

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    Repair a short in the F-CAN_H wire to F-CAN_L wire between PCM terminals A9 and A10.

    NO 

    The F-CAN_H and F-CAN_L wires are not shorted. Go to step 3.

  3. Open wire check (F-CAN_H line) 1

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected
      Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P): disconnected
      SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
      Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector (with ACC): disconnected
      Front passenger's E-pretensioner unit 14P connector (with ACC): disconnected
      ACC unit 20P (with ACC): disconnected
      LKAS camera/control unit 8P connector (with LKAS): disconnected
      FCW/LDW camera unit 10P connector (with FCW/LDW camera): disconnected
    Test circuit F-CAN_H
    Test point 1 Gauge control module connector A (32P) No. 27 (WHT)

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN_H wire is not open. Go to step 4.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_H wire between the PCM (A9) and the gauge control module.

  4. Open wire check (F-CAN_H line) 2

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected
      Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P): disconnected
      SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
      Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector (with ACC): disconnected
      Front passenger's E-pretensioner unit 14P connector (with ACC): disconnected
      ACC unit 20P (with ACC): disconnected
      LKAS camera/control unit 8P connector (with LKAS): disconnected
      FCW/LDW camera unit 10P connector (with FCW/LDW camera): disconnected
    Test circuit F-CAN_H
    Test point 1 VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector No. 38 (WHT)

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN_H wire is not open. Go to step 5.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_H wire between the PCM (A9) and the VSA modulator-control unit.

  5. Open wire check (F-CAN_H line) 3

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected
      Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P): disconnected
      SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected

    Is there continuity?

    YES (with SH-AWD system)

    The F-CAN_H wire is not open. Go to step 6.

    YES (without SH-AWD system)

    The F-CAN_H wire is not open. Go to step 7.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_H wire between the PCM (A9) and the EPS control unit.

  6. Open wire check (F-CAN_H line) 4

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected
      Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P): disconnected
      SRS unit connector A (39P): disconnected
      Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector (with ACC): disconnected

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN_H wire is not open. Go to step 7.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_H wire between the PCM (A9) and the SH-AWD control unit.

  7. Open wire check (F-CAN_H line) 5

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected
      Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P): disconnected

    Is there continuity?

    YES (with ACC)

    The F-CAN_H wire is not open. Go to step 8.

    YES (without ACC)

    The F-CAN_H wire is not open. Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_H wire between the PCM (A9) and the engine mount control unit.

  8. Open wire check (F-CAN_H line) 6

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected

    YES 

    The F-CAN_H wire is not open. Go to step 9.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_H wire between the PCM (A9) and the ACC unit.

  9. Open wire check (F-CAN_H line) 7

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_H wire between the PCM (A9) and the keyless access/TPMS control unit.

  10. Open wire check (F-CAN_L line) 1

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_L wire between the PCM (A10) and the gauge control module.

  11. Open wire check (F-CAN_L line) 2

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_L wire between the PCM (A10) and the VSA modulator-control unit.

  12. Open wire check (F-CAN_L line) 3

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected

    YES (without SH-AWD system)

    The F-CAN_L wire is not open. Go to step 14.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_L wire between the PCM (A10) and the EPS control unit.

  13. Open wire check (F-CAN_L line) 4

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_L wire between the PCM (A10) and the SH-AWD control unit.

  14. Open wire check (F-CAN_L line) 5

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected

    The F-CAN_L wire is not open. Go to step 15.

    YES (without ACC)

    The F-CAN_L wire is not open. Go to step 16.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_L wire between the PCM (A10) and the engine mount control unit.

  15. Open wire check (F-CAN_L line) 6

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected

    The F-CAN_L wire is not open. Go to step 16.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_L wire between the PCM (A10) and the ACC unit.

  16. Open wire check (F-CAN_L line) 7

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    Test condition Vehicle OFF (LOCK) mode
      PCM connector A (51P): disconnected
      Gauge control module connector A (32P): disconnected
      VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector: disconnected
      Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
      Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation): disconnected
      EPS control unit connector A (11P): disconnected
      Engine mount control unit 16P connector: disconnected
      ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector: disconnected
      SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system): disconnected
      Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P): disconnected

    Is there continuity?

    YES 

    The F-CAN_L wire is not open. Go to step 17.

    NO 

    Repair an open in the F-CAN_L wire between the PCM (A10) and the keyless access/TPMS control unit.

  17. EPS control unit internal resistance check

    -1. Reconnect EPS control unit connector A (11P).

    The EPS control unit is OK. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (2014 2015) , then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away and the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the symptom/indication goes away and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (2014 2015), .

    NO 

    Replace the EPS control unit .

  18. Shorted wire check (F-CAN_H line)

    -1. Disconnect the following connectors:

    - 2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    NO 

    The F-CAN_H wire is OK. Go to step 19.

  19. Shorted wire check (F-CAN_L line)

    -1. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

    NO 

    The F-CAN_L wire is OK. Go to step 20.

  20. Gauge control module check

    -1. Reconnect all connectors.

    - 2. Connect the HDS to the DLC.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Gauge control module connector A (32P)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the gauge control module .

    NO 

    Go to step 21.

  21. VSA modulator-control unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the gauge control module connector A (32P).

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the VSA modulator-control unit .

    NO 

    Go to step 22.

  22. Steering angle sensor check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 38P connector.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Steering angle sensor 4P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the steering angle sensor .

    NO (with navigation)

    Go to step 23.

    NO (without navigation)

    Go to step 24.

  23. Navigation unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the steering angle sensor 4P connector.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Audio-navigation unit connector F (18P)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the audio-navigation unit .

    NO 

    Go to step 24.

  24. EPS control unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the steering angle sensor 4P connector (without navigation) or the audio-navigation unit connector F (18P) (with navigation).

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    EPS control unit connector A (11P)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the EPS control unit .

    NO (with SH-AWD system)

    Go to step 25.

    NO (without SH-AWD system)

    Go to step 26.

  25. SH-AWD control unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect EPS control unit connector A (11P).

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) - Refer to: SH-AWD ® Control Unit Removal and Installation (SH-AWD) (2014 2015)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the AWD control unit - Refer to: SH-AWD ® Control Unit Removal and Installation (SH-AWD) (2014 2015), .

    NO 

    Go to step 26.

  26. SRS unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect EPS control unit connector A (11P) (without SH-AWD system) or SH-AWD control unit connector A (20P) (with SH-AWD system).

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    SRS unit connector A (39P) - Refer to: SRS Unit Removal and Installation (2014 2015 2016)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the SRS unit - Refer to: SRS Unit Removal and Installation (2014 2015 2016) .

    NO (with ACC)

    Go to step 27.

    NO (without ACC)

    Go to step 30.

  27. ACC unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect SRS unit connector A (39P).

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    ACC unit 20P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the ACC unit .

    NO 

    Go to step 28.

  28. Driver's E-pretensioner unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect ACC unit 20P connector.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the driver's E-pretensioner unit .

    NO 

    Go to step 29.

  29. Front passenger's E-pretensioner unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the driver's E-pretensioner unit 16P connector.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Front passenger's E-pretensioner unit 14P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the front passenger's E-pretensioner unit .

    NO 

    Go to step 30.

  30. Keyless access/TPMS control unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect SRS unit connector A (39P) (without ACC system) or the front passenger's E-pretensioner unit 14P connector (with ACC system).

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P)

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the Keyless access/TPMS control unit .

    NO (with LKAS)

    Go to step 31.

    NO (without LKAS)

    Go to step 32.

  31. LKAS camera/control unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P).

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    LKAS camera/control unit 8P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the LKAS camera/control unit .

    NO 

    Go to step 32.

  32. Engine mount control unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the keyless access/TPMS control unit connector C (20P) (without LKAS) or the LKAS camera/control unit 8P connector (with LKAS).

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    Engine mount control unit 16P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the engine mount control unit .

    NO 

    Go to step 33.

  33. ANC/active sound control unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the engine mount control unit 16P connector.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the ANC/active sound control unit .

    NO (with FCW/LDW camera)

    Go to step 34.

    NO (without FCW/LDW camera)

    Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (2014 2015), , then recheck. If the HDS identifies the vehicle and the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the HDS identifies the vehicle and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (2014 2015), .

  34. FCW/LDW camera unit check

    -1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

    - 2. Reconnect the ANC/active sound control unit 20P connector.

    - 3. Disconnect the following connector.

    FCW/LDW camera unit 10P connector

    - 4. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and read the HDS.

    Does the HDS identify the vehicle?

    YES 

    Replace the FCW/LDW camera unit .

    NO 

    Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (2014 2015), , then recheck. If the HDS identifies the vehicle and the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the HDS identifies the vehicle and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM - Refer to: PCM Removal and Installation (2014 2015) .
