Diagnostic Procedure
- After checking freeze data, perform PCM reset procedure. See PCM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Install SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100) to Service Check Connector. See Figure
. Test-drive vehicle several times within range of freeze data information.NOTE: If there is no freeze data of misfiring, clear the DTC. Drive vehicle under various conditions to trigger cylinder misfire if no freeze data is available.
- If no misfire DTC is indicated, check for intermittent misfire due to spark plug fouling, etc. (firing is okay at this time). If misfire is detected, exchange spark plug from suspect cylinder with one from another cylinder. Test-drive vehicle several times within range of freeze data information. If misfire does not occur in other cylinder whose spark plug was exchanged, go to next step. If misfire occurs in other cylinder whose spark plug was exchanged, replace faulty spark plug.
- Exchange ignition coil from suspect cylinder with one from another cylinder. Test-drive vehicle several times within range of freeze data information. If any misfire DTC is indicated, go to next step. If no misfire DTC is indicated, check for intermittent misfire due to bad contact in ignition coil connector (firing is okay at this time).
- If misfire does not occur in other cylinder whose ignition coil was exchanged, go to next step. If misfire occurs in other cylinder whose ignition coil was exchanged, replace faulty ignition coil.
- Using a stethoscope, listen for clicking sound at injector of suspect cylinder. If clicking sound is heard at injector, go to step 7 . If no clicking sound is heard at injector, go to next step.
- Check for an open or short in wiring harness between PCM and fuel injector. See appropriate wiring diagram under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary. If wiring and harness are okay, replace injector. Substitute a known-good PCM, and recheck. If symptom/indication goes away, replace original PCM.
- Exchange injector from suspect cylinder with one from another cylinder. Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes. Test-drive vehicle several times within range of freeze data information. If a misfire DTC is indicated, go to next step. If no misfire DTC is indicated, intermittent misfire due to bad contact in injector connector (firing is okay at this time).
- If misfire does not occur in other cylinder whose injector was exchanged, go to next step. If misfire occurs in the other cylinder whose injector was exchanged, replace faulty fuel injector.
- Check wires and wiring harnesses between following components:
- Ignition Control Module (ICM) and PCM
- ignition coil and ICM
- ignition coil and battery
- ignition coil and spark plug voltage detection module
- Substitute a known-good ICM. If misfire does not occur, replace original ICM. If misfire does occur, check cylinder leak-down and compression pressure.
