Coolant Temperature Gauge Needle Inoperative

  1. Remove PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and terminal A31 (Yellow/Green wire) of Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 32-pin harness connector "A" (backprobe). See Figure . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Engine coolant temperature gauge needle should move to hot side after 30 seconds. If engine coolant temperature gauge does not operate as specified, go to next step. If engine coolant temperature gauge operates as specified, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. If problem is corrected, replace original PCM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 32-pin connector "A". Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal A31 (Yellow/Green wire) of PCM 32-pin harness connector "A". If 5 volts does not exist, go to next step. If 5 volts exists, replace fuel and temperature gauge.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster and disconnect instrument cluster 18-pin connector "B". See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity in Yellow/Green wire between terminal A31 of PCM 32-pin harness connector "A" and terminal B3 of instrument cluster 18-pin harness connector. If continuity exists, replace fuel and temperature gauge. If continuity does not exist, check for open in Yellow/Green wire between PCM 32-pin harness connector "A" and instrument cluster 18-pin connector.
