"D4" Indicator Light On Constantly: 3.5RL

  1. Remove PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 26-pin connector "E". See Figure. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check for voltage between ground and PCM 26-pin harness connector "E" terminal No. 23 (Brown/Yellow wire). If voltage is not present, go to next step. If voltage is present, repair short to power in Brown/Yellow wire between PCM 26-pin connector "E" and instrument cluster 30-pin connector "B" terminal No. 27. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Reconnect PCM 26-pin connector "E". Turn ignition switch to ON position. Shift gear selector to any position except "D4" position. Backprobing, check voltage between ground and PCM 26-pin harness connector "E" terminal No. 8 (Yellow wire). If voltage is not present, go to next step. If voltage is present, replace PCM.
  3. Test A/T gear position switch. See A/T GEAR POSITION SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTING. If switch is okay, go to next step. If switch is faulty, replace A/T gear position switch. See A/T GEAR POSITION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Check for short to ground in Yellow wire between PCM 26-pin connector "E" and A/T gear position switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. See SUBSTITUTING PCM under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. If problem goes away, replace original PCM.
