Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
- Locate Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) on left side of engine near engine oil filter. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect VSS 3-pin connector. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between VSS 3-pin connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire) and ground. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check for poor connections or open in Black wire between VSS and ground connection, located on left side of engine.
- Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between VSS 3-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow wire) and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check fuse No. 1 (10-amp) located in underdash fuse/relay box in left kick panel. Check for a short to ground in Yellow wire between fuse No. 1 and VSS. Repair as necessary.
- Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between VSS 3-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Orange wire) and ground. If voltage is about 5 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 5 volts, check Orange wire for an open or a short to ground between VSS and Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Transmission Control Module (TCM) and cruise control unit. A short to ground in Orange wire can be caused by a short in any component connected to Orange wire. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3020A) between VSS and VSS 3-pin connector. See Fig 2
. Connect voltmeter positive lead to Green test harness clip and negative lead to Red test harness clip. Cover White test harness clip with tape.
- Raise and support front of vehicle. Place transmission in Neutral. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Block one front wheel, slowly rotate opposite wheel and measure voltage. If voltage pulses from zero volts to about 5 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage does not pulse as specified, replace VSS. See Figure
.
- Disconnect instrument cluster Blue 16-pin "A" (Fig. Figure
) connector. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect voltmeter between Blue 16-pin "A" connector terminal A3 (Orange wire) and ground. Block one front wheel, slowly rotate opposite wheel and measure voltage. If voltage pulses from zero volts to about 5 volts or more, replace speedometer. If voltage does not pulse as specified, repair open in Orange wire between VSS and speedometer.
