Safety Systems Indicator

The safety indicator comes on to warn the driver of safety related conditions. The display consists of LEDs arranged to illuminate a graphic display of the car. With the ignition in RUN or START, battery voltage is supplied through fuse 5 to the safety indicator circuit and each of the LEDs, turning them on.

  1. Indicator Check: When you turn the ignition switch to RUN or START, the safety indicator circuit grounds the LEDs, turning them on for several seconds to test the display.
  2. Ajar Indicators: Opening either door, the trunk or the engine compartment lid provides a ground for the appropriate indicator LED. The LED stays on as long as the door/lid is open, and goes off when it closes (door or lid switch opens).
  3. Retractable Headlight Door Malfunction Indicator: When the retractable headlight control unit detects the headlights are up, it sends a signal through the RED/YEL wire to the gauge assembly. The transistor in the gauge assembly turns on and connects the LED indicator to G401, turning on the indicator light.
  4. Brake Lamp Indicator: When you turn the ignition switch to RUN, voltage is applied to the safety indicator circuit. The safety indicator circuit provides ground for the "brake lamp" indicator for a few seconds. The indicator comes on for those few seconds to test the bulb. With the brakes off, ground is provided for the safety indicator through either of the failure sensor coils and any of the brake light bulbs. When you push the brake pedal, battery voltage is applied to all the failure sensor coils. The coils close the relay contacts, and the safety indicator circuit ORN/WHT wire stays grounded. If one of the brake light bulbs fails, at least one of the failure sensor coils will not be energized. The safety indicator circuit ORN/WHT wire will then not be grounded by either the diode or the relay contact, which will cause the safety indicator circuit to turn on the "brake lamp" indicator.
