Normal Operation
The fail-safe cooling status is sent from the powertrain control module (PCM) to the instrument cluster over the high speed controller area network (CAN) communication bus. During an engine overheat condition, the PCM enters into the fail-safe mode and sends a signal to the instrument cluster to turn on the fail-safe cooling warning indicator. During a fail-safe mode the instrument cluster also pegs the temperature gauge pointer at hot (H), or the highest position on the gauge to alert the driver of the overheat condition.

DTC U0294 - sets if the fail-safe cooling status message is missing for more than 5 seconds and the instrument cluster turns off the fail-safe warning indicator.
