Normal Operation
The powertrain control module (PCM) receives the engine coolant temperature status from the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor through hardwired circuitry. The PCM transmits the engine coolant temperature status to the instrument cluster over the high speed controller area network (CAN) communication bus. The instrument cluster monitors the engine coolant temperature data received from the PCM and commands the engine temperature gauge to a corresponding position DTC U0294 - sets if the coolant temperature data message is missing from the PCM for more than 5 seconds and the engine coolant temperature gauge fails to operate, indicating C (cold).
