PINPOINT TEST 3: INCORRECT FUEL GAUGE INDICATION

Step 1 - 2:

Step 3 - 6:

Step 7 - 9:

Step 10 - 11:

Normal Operation
Fuel level is determined using a variable resistance fuel level sender unit, with an approximate resistance range between 15 Ohms at empty (E) and 160 Ohms at full (F). The fuel level sender unit is hardwired to the instrument cluster between the signal circuit (Y/W) and the return circuit (B/O), which is grounded internally within the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster monitors the resistance readings that are sent to the instrument cluster from the fuel pump module and commands the fuel gauge with a corresponding movement of the pointer.

Possible Causes
- circuit (Y/W) open, short to ground or short to power
- circuit (B/O) open or short to power
- fuel tank
- fuel pump module
- instrument cluster
