Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement




Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement

Special Tools
* J 24319-B Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller
* J 29193 Steering Linkage Installer (12 mm)

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
2. Mark the position of the steering linkage inner tie rod nut and loosen it.




3. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod nut from the steering linkage outer tie rod (2) and discard it.




4. Use puller J 24319-B to separate the steering linkage outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.




5. Separate the steering linkage outer tie rod (1) from the steering linkage inner tie rod.
6. Inspect the steering linkage inner tie rod for bent or damaged threads. Repair or replace the steering linkage inner tie rod as necessary. Refer to Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage (Non-Rack & Pinion)).
7. Clean the tapered surface of the steering knuckle.

Installation Procedure

1. Lubricate the steering linkage inner tie rod threads with chassis lubricant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations (Maintenance).




2. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod (1) to the steering linkage inner tie rod.





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

3. Use installer J 29193 to seat the steering linkage outer tie rod in the steering knuckle.

Tighten installer J 29193 to 54 Nm (40 lb ft).




4. Install the new steering linkage outer tie rod nut to the steering linkage outer tie rod (2).

Tighten the nut to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).

5. Tighten the steering linkage inner tie rod nut.

Tighten the nut to 68 Nm (50 lb ft).

6. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment (Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment).
